It’s been forty years or more since author Studs Terek (Pulitzer Winner) traveled this country conducting great interviews for his book Working. One of the people he spoke with had this to say about the subject: “I think all of us are always looking for any calling, not for a job and most of us- like the worker of assembly lines and have the career that is very small for one’s spirit.
“Combine personal and professional qualities -For the idealist, being who are able to earn a living and serve the community is a way of finding a balance between their personal and professional lives. And for the professional for whom career development is the priority, Non-Profit Organizations offer various types of jobs, which generally fall under one of two categories.ProgramsThose who perform the actual services offered by organizations hold these “front-line” jobs.
They include doctors, scientists, counselors, instructors, nurses and other professionals. People who are trained in professions such as these can offer a great deal to human-service organizations.
Administration these are the people who keep the organizations alive behind the scenes. Through general management, volunteer management, fundraising, public relations and more, their job is to see to it that these groups can afford to continue offering their services and paying the people who do the “hands-on” work.
This area offers tremendous opportunity for finance, management, communications, and human resources professionals. Careers with Non-Profit Organizations can be diverse, interesting, and very fulfilling. But how lucrative are they? Like the profit sector, that depends largely upon the organization that you go to work for.
A large, nationally recognized organization probably has a larger operating budget, and thus can offer more competitive salaries than a smaller NPO.Planning a non-profit career path is not dissimilar than planning a career in the profit-earning sector. It’s difficult to generalize about non-profit work because the sector is so vast.
Working in a non-profit hospital is more or less the same as working in a for-profit hospital, for example. And working in a non-profit with only three (or fewer) staff people is very much different than working in a larger organization that may have 50 or 100, or many more employees.
Work is more specialized in larger nonprofits because larger organizations have more work to do and more resources to do it.Given that, a person with a background in Human Resources could make a very smooth transition into working for an NPO, by using the same research and resources to strategize their job search.
Factors and consideration before joining an organization –the work of the organization,-their history, and growth over the previous five years,-their budget, etc. By considering these factors you can determine what they are capable of offering someone with your skills and talents. Add to that your desire to join the organization in the kind of service work they do, and you may just be able to construct the ideal job for you. Where the Heart Is! But what about those who know they want to work with an organization, but don’t have a great deal of experience? Try volunteering! A volunteer is always a welcome and needed part of the body of a non-profit group, and you are usually invited to specify the area’s in which you would like to lend a hand. You can gain experience that will enhance your resume, and a work history that is related to what you actually want to do.
Like college internships, this always helps the applicant get favorable attention from employers. Once you’re in the door, like in any position, continue mapping your career path. With a constant need for help in almost all areas of operation, Non-Profit Organizations offer unique opportunities for exploring new career options while you’re employed.
There are interesting new professions developing all of the time with non-profits, such as fundraising or volunteer management. If your background reflects strengths in these areas, pursue them! To learn “useful” things–Take time away from your normal routines.-Learn from all experiences.-Set limits. On-Profit’s Bottom Line -Working in the non-profit sector can be exciting, demanding, and rewarding.
